A-536(1) Copy Binding: Eighteenth-century red morocco, decorated on both covers with a gold-tooled double fillet forming a frame, a gold-tooled fleuron within each corner; on edges of the boards fern-tips within a broken zig-zag line; gold-tooled spine; marbled pastedowns. Size: 218 × 158 × 30 mm. Size of leaf: 210 × 138 mm. On [a1r] a five-line initial ‘M' is supplied in purple on a gold ground, with blue infill, and foliate extensions into the gutter in red and green, and historiated with the figure of a bearded bishop, presumably Augustine, wearing a red robe with a black collar, and a mitre, and holding a crozier in his left hand, while giving a blessing with his right. Decorated in Milan: see Pächt and Alexander II, 114 no. pr. 134. Four- to five-line initials and paragraph marks are supplied in red or blue. Capitals touched with yellow wash. Provenance: Milan, Augustinian Hermits, S. Maria coronata; sixteenth-century inscription on [a1r]. Use granted to brother Felicianus [Conradus?] of Cremona and confirmed by Basilius de Ripa (†1505), Vicar-general from 1500; ‘Ad usum fratris Feliciani de Cremona. Frater Basilius de Ripa v[icarius] g[eneralis] con[firmavit] manu propria'; inscription on [a1r]. George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough (1766-1840); sale (8 June 1819), lot 339(?).
