  1. M-275(1) First copy Wanting the blank leaf qq8, also N5, and S2. The portion of leaf c4 containing the office of St Thomas of Canterbury cut away. Leaf [*1] mutilated. Binding: Contemporary English calf, with panel stamp inscribed ‘Domine dum veneris iudicare noli me condempnare'. Two metal catches attached to the lower board, and remains of one clasp. Rebacked. Size: 175 × 125 × 43 mm. Size of leaf: 169 × 110 mm. Prayers for Pope: in Good Friday petitions, first prayer is hatched out, but still legible; in Votive mass for Pope, rubric is intact, mass crossed out with large crosses and difficult to read, and scribbled over. In Feast of St Thomas, rubric lined through with thin ink strokes and difficult to read, with mass cut out or hatched out but still legible; in Translation of St Thomas, rubric lined through with thin ink strokes and difficult to read, but later restored (as in Calendar), with mass crossed out with large crosses and smudged with ink, but still legible. Rubrics conveying indulgences: Mass of Five Wounds and 'Missa pro mortalitate evitanda' missing; in 'Pro mulieribus pregnantibus' and Indulgenced gospel of the passion composed by Pope John XXII, rubrics scribbled over. In Canon, 'famulo tuo papa nostro' blotted out with thick ink strokes, and difficult to read; words 'rege nostro' added in the margin, but later lined through with thin ink strokes and difficult to read; word 'papa' also added in the margin [ex informatione Aude de Mézerac-Zanetti, 'Catalogue of defacings in missals' [thesis typescript]]. In the calendar, the deletions ordered in 1538 (of the word 'papa' [lined through with thin ink strokes] and of the festival of Thomas Becket) have been performed but restored in a contemporary hand. On q3r manuscript entries of births of the Everard family in the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI: 'Edward Everard was borne ye xxviij day of ianuary in ye xxviij year of .H. the viij [1537]'; followed by the entries for 'Alys Everard' (10 Feb. 1539), 'John Everard' [deleted] (6 Mar. 1540), 'Elysabeth Everard' [deleted] (26 Mar. 1541)', Tomasyn Everard' (15 Aug. 1544), 'John Everard' (25 Oct. 1545), 'Gaving Euerard' (19 Apr. 1546), 'Elysabeth Euerard (26 Feb. 1547), 'Harry(?) the son of Richard(?) Everard' (24 Oct. 1534), 'Wylyam Everard' (3 Dec. 1536). On verso of rear endleaf a recipe in the same hand that has added part of the notes on q3r: 'For my agu. Take bursa pastorys [shephard's purse] knottgros [knotgrass] browne [ ]ell sengrene [house leek] and syncfoyle [cinquefoil] and schrede them and stampe them with halfe a handfull of bay saltt and so lay partt of ytt apon the pulsys of ye wryst and lyke quantyty apon the pulsys and the pusysys and so bynd this to byfore the fytt is owre. Also take ye stryanings of ye rotys of crowe foote and bette them with a lytyll bay salt and laye of ytt to the Inner partt of ye tho[ ]ys and g[ ]toys'. 'B. T. Size of leaf: 165 × 104 mm. Prayers for Pope: in Good Friday petitions, 'papa' scratched out and difficult to read, whilst rest intact; votive mass for Pope intact. Feast of St Thomas intact; in Translation of St Thomas, rubric scratched out, but still legible, with the mass intact.
